Since the 1960s, Parks branched out into literature, writing The Learning Tree (1963), several books of poetry illustrated with his photographs, and three volumes of memoirs. In 1969, Parks became Hollywood? S first major black director with his film adaptation of his autobiographical novel The Learning Tree. Parks also composed the film? S musical score and wrote the script. Shaft, Parks? 1971 film starring Richard Roundtree detective, became a great success which led to a series of blaxploitation movies. Parksa? idea of the configuration was confirmed by the well, with her portrayal of black leather clothing super-cool private detective employed to find the kidnapped daughter of a Harlem gangster. Parks also directed the sequel to the 1972 shaft? S Big Score in which the protagonist is caught in the middle of rival gangs of traffickers. Parksa? S other director credits include Thea Super Cops (1974), Leadbelly Anda (1976), a biopic of the blues musician Huddie Ledbetter.
